Drain pump repair in Mukilteo when the tub won’t empty
Standing water in the washer drum or dishwasher sump, a hum with nothing draining, or a drain code on the display: each points at the drain pump or something blocking it. In Mukilteo we sort out which before replacing anything.

Drain pump
What a drain pump does at the end of each cycle
A drain pump is a small electric motor with a plastic impeller, mounted low in the machine where the water collects. When the control calls for a drain, the impeller spins and throws water up and out through the drain hose, into a standpipe or laundry sink for a washer, or into the sink drain or disposal for a dishwasher. On a front-loader the pump also runs during spin to clear the water wrung from the clothes. Many front-loaders put a coin trap or filter ahead of the pump to catch hairpins, buttons and coins. Dishwashers rely on a filter set into the tub floor. A few older dishwashers used one reversing motor to both wash and drain, but most current models have a separate pump just for draining.
Most drain pumps that reach us are jammed rather than worn out. A sock slips past the door boot, an underwire works loose from a bra, or broken glass and fruit pits get past a dishwasher filter that has not been rinsed in months. The impeller stops, the motor hums, and after enough strain the winding can overheat and open. Pumps also fail from age, with worn bearings that grind or a shaft seal that starts to leak. Not every slow drain is the pump’s doing, though. A kinked drain hose, a clogged standpipe, or an overdose of detergent that fills the sump with foam can each set off the same error. That is why the hose and the house drain get checked before we commit to a new pump.
Signs
Signs the drain pump is jammed or failing
- Water left standing in the washer drum after the cycle ends, and clothes still dripping wet.
- A steady hum or buzz from the bottom of the machine with no sound of water moving.
- A drain error such as OE on an LG washer or a long-drain code on a Whirlpool front-loader.
- Murky water pooled in the bottom of the dishwasher after the cycle has finished.
- Grinding, rattling or clicking during the drain, as if something loose is caught in the impeller.
- A small puddle under the front of the washer or dishwasher that keeps coming back.
Where we find it
Where drain pump failures turn up
| Machine or model type | What we see with the drain pump there |
|---|---|
| Front-load washers | Clogged coin traps, socks past the boot, oversudsing and long-drain codes. |
| Top-load washers, including HE models | Small items slipping between the inner basket and the outer tub. |
| Dishwashers under the counter | Dirty filters, pits and glass in the sump, a hum without draining. |
| Stacked laundry centers | The same jams as full-size washers, in a tighter cabinet with less room to work. |
How we test it
How we confirm a failed drain pump
- 1
Rule out the plumbing
The technician checks the drain hose for kinks and crushed spots, then confirms the standpipe or sink drain takes water at full flow. If the house drain is what backs up, that work belongs to a plumber, and we tell you so before any part is ordered.
- 2
Clear the trap and filter
On front-loaders we drain the drum into a pan and open the coin trap; on dishwashers we pull the tub filter and the sump cover. We look for socks, glass, pits and wire. Plenty of pumps run again once the blockage is out, which saves you a part.
- 3
Meter the motor
With power off, the meter goes across the pump’s windings. An open reading means the motor has burned out, while a reading in range sends us back to the impeller. We turn it by hand to feel for a seized bearing, a cracked vane or something still wedged in the housing.
- 4
Command a drain
In service mode the technician commands the pump and measures voltage at its connector. Voltage present with no pumping confirms the pump has failed; no voltage moves the search to the wiring or the control board. A full test cycle follows every drain repair.

Soft water, suds and drain pumps around Mukilteo
Mukilteo’s water comes from Everett’s Spada Lake supply and is very soft. Soft water lathers easily, so the dose printed on a detergent bottle is often far more than a front-loader here needs. The extra foam fills the sump and drain hose, the pump moves air and bubbles instead of water, and the washer posts a suds or long-drain code. Plenty of those calls end with the pump testing good and a short talk about measuring detergent. Dishwashers show it too, as cloudy glasses and residue. About half of Mukilteo homes date from 1980 to 1999, many in Harbour Pointe, and a washer on an upper floor makes a drain fault worth catching early.
FAQ
Drain pump questions
What can I safely check before you arrive?
Look behind the washer for a kinked or flattened drain hose, and see whether the standpipe or laundry sink is backing up. On a dishwasher, lift out the filter in the tub floor and rinse it, a routine the owner’s manual describes. Leave the front coin trap on a washer closed if the drum is full, because all that water comes out there.
How do I get my clothes out of a washer that won’t drain?
Don’t force the door. Most front-loaders keep it locked while water sits in the drum. The technician drains the drum into a pan first, then the door releases. With a top-loader you can bail water into a bucket if you want the clothes out sooner, but leave the machine unplugged and the panels closed.
Does too much detergent really cause drain codes?
It can. A normal pour of HE detergent foams up in water this soft, and foam is hard for any pump to move. The washer senses slow draining and stops with a code. If the pump tests good, we say so, run rinses to clear the suds, and suggest a smaller measure for later loads.
Do first-time customers get anything off the repair?
Yes. If we have not fixed an appliance for you before, tick the first-repair box on the booking form or mention it when you call, and up to $15 comes off the price of the drain pump repair. It applies to the repair, not to the diagnostic.
Do you cover Harbour Pointe and Old Town Mukilteo?
Yes, all of Mukilteo, from Harbour Pointe and Olympus Terrace to Old Town near the ferry, along with Picnic Point and the rest of our six cities. Drain pumps for the common washer and dishwasher models ride in the van. When a part has to be ordered, the return visit adds no second trip charge.
Book the $85 diagnostic visit
On a Mukilteo drain call, the $85 diagnostic is billed by itself only when you decline the repair; approve it and the $85 sits inside the one written price for the pump work.
