Dryers
Dryers across Lynnwood, Brier, Edmonds and the neighboring cities
Whether a dryer burns gas or runs on electric heat depends a lot on the city. Natural gas lines reach all six, yet the share of homes heating with it swings widely: roughly two-thirds in Brier, more than half in Mill Creek, around half in Mukilteo and Edmonds, and only about a third in Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace, where electric heat and apartments are the rule. That split shows up in laundry rooms: gas dryers in Brier ranch houses, electric stacked units in Lynnwood condos. The marine climate adds its own load. Warm, wet exhaust traveling through a cold crawlspace or garage condenses on the duct wall, lint sticks to the moisture, and the run narrows every winter. Edmonds view homes on slopes often carry that exhaust a long distance to the vent hood.
Most dryer failures start with airflow. When the vent is long, crushed or packed with lint, heat cannot leave the drum fast enough, the cycle stretches out, and the safety parts take the strain: the thermal fuse opens, the high-limit thermostat trips, and electric elements burn through. Gas dryers add igniters and gas valve coils that weaken with age. One call that sums it up: an electric dryer in an Edmonds hillside house ran but gave no heat. Its vent dropped through the crawlspace to a hood on the downhill side, and the foil duct had sagged into a loop holding water and lint. The meter showed an open thermal fuse. We replaced it and showed the owner the sagging section, because a new fuse would open again until that run was cleared and straightened.
Symptoms we see
Dryer symptoms and the parts usually behind them
- 01
Runs but no heat
On electric dryers we usually find an open thermal fuse, a burned-out element, or a failed high-limit or cycling thermostat. Gas units point to the igniter, the flame sensor or the coils on the gas valve. We read each part with the meter, and we look at the vent, since a blocked one often caused the failure.
- 02
Clothes still damp after a cycle
Usually the dryer heats but cannot breathe: a full lint screen, a crushed transition duct, a long run through a crawlspace, or an outside hood whose flap no longer opens. Sensor-dry models also stop early when the moisture bars are coated with dryer-sheet residue. We measure the flow at the outside hood and clean the sensor bars.
- 03
Drum will not turn
If the motor hums but the drum sits still, the drive belt has usually snapped or slipped off the idler pulley. If nothing runs at all, the door switch, the start switch, the motor or, on many models, the thermal fuse is the cause. We test which one before opening the parts bin.
- 04
Squealing, thumping or scraping
A squeal tends to come from an idler pulley that has lost its lubrication or from worn rollers; a rhythmic thump points to a flat spot on a roller; scraping often means worn drum glides or a loose felt seal. A sock in the blower wheel makes its own racket. Worn parts are replaced and the belt inspected.
- 05
Gas dryer clicks, no flame
If the igniter never glows, the igniter or flame sensor is suspect; if it glows and the burner will not light, or lights and drops out, the gas valve coils usually are. We test the igniter, sensor and coils with the meter. If you smell gas, leave first and phone the gas utility from outside; we come after.
- 06
Hot cabinet or scorched smell
Too much heat in the cabinet means lint is packed near the heat source, the vent is restricted, or a cycling thermostat has stuck closed. Stop using the dryer until it is checked. We clean lint out of the base, test both thermostats, and look at the whole vent path.
Brands and models
Dryer brands, stacked pairs and compact units
Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and Amana are behind many of the older gas and electric dryers in Brier and Edmonds houses, and plenty of them share the same belt, roller and fuse layout. Newer laundry rooms around Mill Creek and in Harbour Pointe lean toward LG, Samsung, GE and Electrolux, some with steam. Condos bring stacked laundry centers from GE and Frigidaire, Bosch and Miele heat-pump or condensing compacts, and the occasional Speed Queen. All of them are on our list.
Thermal fuses, valve coils, igniters, elements, belts, rollers and idler pulleys ride in the van, since these are the dryer parts we replace most.
By city
Dryer service from Brier to Mukilteo
Brier, with its high share of gas-heated homes, gives us more gas dryers for its size than any other city we cover, often in garages on wooded lots. Mill Creek follows, with over half on gas. Edmonds and Mukilteo sit near an even split, and their slopes and view lots produce the longest vent runs we see. In Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace, roughly a third of homes use gas, so most calls are electric dryers in apartments and condos, often stacked ones.
Repair or replace
When a dryer is worth fixing
A dryer is mechanically simple, which works in your favor. Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, igniters and elements are modest repairs, while the drum, cabinet and motor on most models outlast several sets of them. The harder cases are an electronic control that fails on an aging dryer, a worn motor alongside other tired parts, or a drum with a damaged seam. Vent condition counts as well: put a new dryer on a crushed duct and it will be opening fuses soon too. You get one written price with the failed part named; if it is not worth spending on, you pay $85 for the visit and nothing more.
FAQ
Dryer repair questions
Why do my loads dry slower in the wet months?
Damp marine air and a cold vent run work against the dryer. Exhaust cools in a crawlspace or garage duct, water condenses on the walls, and lint sticks to it until the run narrows. Long runs on Edmonds and Mukilteo slopes suffer most. Watch the outside hood while the dryer runs; the flap should swing open firmly, and if it barely moves, airflow is restricted.
Is a gas dryer harder to repair than an electric one?
Not really, just different. Gas models rely on an igniter, a flame sensor and valve coils where electric models use an element and thermostats, and both share belts, rollers and fuses. Gas dryers are common in Brier and Mill Creek houses. The technician tests the burner assembly and confirms a clean, steady flame before leaving.
Why does the breaker trip once the dryer starts heating?
It can be the dryer: a shorted heating element or a terminal block burned at the cord connection will trip a breaker, and those are parts we replace. A worn breaker, a loose wire in the outlet or a damaged circuit belongs to the home’s wiring instead, and when the fault is there we say so directly and point you to an electrician.
Is there dryer repair near me in a Lynnwood apartment?
Yes. Closet laundry centers are everywhere in Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace apartments, and most dryer repairs happen with the unit in place. When it has to come forward, we protect the floor and trim. Pass along the gate code, the unit number and parking instructions when booking, and the technician can walk straight in.
Do dryer sheets cause problems?
They can. Softener sheets coat the lint screen and the metal sensor strips near the lint trap, so sensor-dry cycles end early and clothes come out damp. Scrub the screen in the sink occasionally; if water beads on it instead of passing through, it is coated. We clean the sensor bars on every dryer visit.
Can the washer be checked on the same trip?
Yes. Adding the washer to the visit takes $10 off its diagnostic, so the machine that leaves clothes soggy can be looked at alongside the dryer. Use the second-machine option in the booking form or mention it when you call. Both machines get separate written prices before anything is fixed.
Book the $85 diagnostic visit
A dryer diagnosis is $85: go ahead with the repair and it is already inside the written price, skip the repair and that $85 is the entire charge.
