Ice makers

Ice makers in Lynnwood, Mill Creek and the nearby cities

Ice makers here live inside a wide range of refrigerators. Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace apartments often have top-freezer units where the ice maker is an add-on kit, sometimes never connected to water at all. Houses in Mill Creek, Brier and Harbour Pointe lean toward French-door refrigerators that keep the ice maker in a fresh-food door, and side-by-sides with a dispenser, fed by a water line that runs through a crawlspace or along a garage wall. The water itself is easy on them: Everett’s supply from Spada Lake is very soft, so mineral crust rarely narrows a valve or fill tube. A slow fill points instead to a clogged filter, a tired inlet valve or low pressure. Damp air is the harder adversary, sneaking into in-door ice compartments and settling as frost.

Most ice maker calls come down to water not arriving or ice not leaving. Water stops when the fill tube freezes shut, the inlet valve fails, or a clogged filter starves the fill. Ice stays put when the ice maker’s motor or thermostat quits, the shutoff arm is stuck up, or cubes fuse into a block the auger cannot turn. A call that followed the November 2024 windstorm shows how it goes: a French-door refrigerator in Mukilteo cooled again once power returned, but its in-door ice maker never restarted. The module had stopped mid-harvest with its ejector arm frozen into the cubes, and the meter showed its motor open. We replaced the ice maker assembly, tested the inlet valve coil, and ran a test cycle to watch the mold fill and empty.

Symptoms we see

Signs the ice maker needs attention

  1. 01

    No ice at all

Check the easy things first: the shutoff arm or switch may be off, or the freezer may be too warm to make ice. Beyond those, the usual suspects are a frozen fill tube, a failed inlet valve, a clogged filter or an ice maker whose motor has quit. We test each in that order.

  2. 02

    Small or hollow cubes

Undersized cubes tell you the mold is short of water. In soft local water that is rarely scale; more often the filter is overdue, the supply valve is partly closed, household pressure is low, or the inlet valve is weak. We measure the fill, check pressure at the valve, and test its coil.

  3. 03

    Ice fused into a block

Cubes that melt slightly and refreeze weld together, usually because the freezer warms during defrost trouble, a door was left ajar, or ice sat unused for weeks. On in-door ice makers a poor compartment seal lets damp air in. We clear the bin, check the seal and defrost system, and test the auger.

  4. 04

    Dispenser grinds, nothing comes out

A humming or grinding dispenser usually means the auger is jammed by a block of ice, the auger motor has failed, or the chute flap is frozen shut. We clear the chute, then test the auger motor and the paddle switch behind the dispenser, and check the flap’s heater where the model has one.

  5. 05

    Water in the bin

A leaking inlet valve, a split fill tube, or a cabinet tipped out of level can overfill the mold and spill water into the bin, where it freezes into sheets, or onto the floor below. We check the valve for seepage, level the cabinet, and inspect the supply line behind it.

  6. 06

    Frost inside the ice compartment

French-door models with an in-door ice maker rely on a seal and a small duct of cold air from the freezer. When the seal wears or the duct frosts over, ice clumps and production slows. We replace the seal or clear the duct, and check the fan that feeds the compartment.

Brands and models

Ice maker brands and refrigerator styles

Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Kenmore and Amana share a family of freezer ice makers, while GE and Café use their own designs, including in-door units on French-door models. LG puts many of its ice makers in the door, some with a second maker for slow, round ice. Frigidaire and Electrolux appear in apartments and houses alike. Built-in columns from Thermador, Bosch and Miele keep the ice maker in a freezer drawer or column. We repair all of these.

Complete ice maker assemblies, water inlet valves, fill tube heaters, auger motors and evaporator fan motors travel in the van for the refrigerators we see most.

By city

Ice maker repair in all six cities

In Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace, many apartment refrigerators came with an ice maker kit that was never plumbed, and we can tell you what connecting one would involve. Edmonds remodels bring built-in columns with drawer ice makers. Brier and Mill Creek houses run long water lines through crawlspaces and garages, which a hard cold snap can freeze. Mukilteo, and Harbour Pointe especially, has plenty of French-door refrigerators with in-door ice makers.

Repair or replace

Repair the ice maker, or switch it off?

Replacing an ice maker usually means swapping the whole assembly, and an inlet valve or auger motor is just as contained, so most ice maker repairs are a short job. The harder question comes when the ice maker is only a symptom. If the freezer runs too warm, the fix belongs to the refrigerator, and that can lead to an evaporator fan, a defrost part or a reading that points at the sealed system, which we explain along with what it means for the whole refrigerator. Some owners would rather shut the ice maker off and fill trays; that is a fair choice, and the written price helps you make it. Declining the repair leaves $85 as the full bill.

FAQ

Ice maker repair questions

Why is the ice maker dead after a power outage?

Long outages, such as the November 2024 windstorm in Snohomish County, often catch an ice maker mid-cycle, and some do not restart cleanly. First check that the shutoff arm is down or the switch is on, and give the freezer time to get fully cold again. If the bin stays empty after a full day, the module, the inlet valve or a frozen fill tube needs testing.

Will you work on a separate undercounter ice machine?

No. Our work covers the ice makers inside refrigerators, whether in the freezer, in a French-door compartment or in a built-in column. Standalone and undercounter ice machines, including the clear-ice models some remodeled kitchens add, are outside what we service. The refrigerator around a built-in ice maker is very much ours, though.

Should I change the water filter first?

If the cubes have been shrinking, yes, it is a sensible first step. Even with soft local water, a filter past its date clogs with sediment and starves the fill. Use the filter made for your model, flush a few pitchers through the dispenser, and give the ice maker a day. If the cubes stay small, the inlet valve or water pressure is next.

Can a water line in a Brier crawlspace freeze?

It can during a hard cold snap, especially a line run along an outside wall, through a vented crawlspace or across an unheated garage. Houses in Brier, Edmonds and Mill Creek often have runs like that. A frozen line looks exactly like an ice maker failure. We trace the line, check the valve, and tell you where it needs protecting.

Is it worth fixing the ice maker in a Lynnwood apartment?

Often, because the ice maker assembly or inlet valve is usually the whole repair. In Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace rentals we can work through the property manager and give them the written price before any work. When the refrigerator around it is the real problem, we explain that first, since a new ice maker in a warm freezer makes nothing.

How soon can you come for an ice maker?

Most ice maker visits land on the same day or the next, Monday through Saturday. If the freezer is also warming, tell us when you book, because a refrigerator losing cold moves to the front of the schedule. The model and serial numbers are on a sticker inside the cabinet; share them on the phone or in the booking form, and the right assembly travels with the technician.
